Desirable difficulties: why learning that feels harder often works better
Most of what this pillar covers — spacing, retrieval practice, interleaving — shares a suspicious family resemblance: in each case, the condition that produces worse performance during practice produces better retention and transfer afterwards. Robert and Elizabeth Bjork gave the family its name: desirable difficulties (Bjork, 1994; Bjork & Bjork, 2011).
The central distinction: performance is not learning
The framework rests on one of the most consequential distinctions in the field, laid out comprehensively by Soderstrom and Bjork (2015): performance — what you can observe during instruction — is an unreliable index of learning — the durable change that shows up later, somewhere else. The two dissociate in both directions: conditions that inflate practice performance (massing, re-reading, predictable drills, answers in view) routinely depress long-term retention; conditions that depress practice performance (spacing, testing, mixing) routinely improve it.
This is not a small measurement quibble. It means the evidence of your own eyes — and your pupils' sense of what's working — will systematically favor the worse methods. Fluent re-reading feels productive (it's fast, familiar, error-free); effortful retrieval feels shaky. The feeling is real; its interpretation is backwards. Learners consistently predict better results from the fluent conditions and get better results from the effortful ones (Kornell & Bjork, 2008 documented exactly this mismatch for interleaving).
What makes a difficulty desirable
The difficulty must be one that triggers the encoding and retrieval processes that support learning — and that the learner can meet. The canonical members:
- Spacing — the difficulty is re-engaging with partly forgotten material; the reconstruction is the strengthening.
- Retrieval — the difficulty is producing rather than recognizing; the production is the strengthening.
- Interleaving — the difficulty is re-selecting which method applies each time; the discrimination is the strengthening.
- Variation — practicing in varied conditions or with varied examples rather than one fixed drill.
And the essential caveat, from the Bjorks themselves: a difficulty a learner is not equipped to overcome is not desirable. A child asked to retrieve something never adequately taught, or to interleave methods none of which are yet stable, gets frustration without the strengthening. Prerequisites and placement are what keep difficulties inside the desirable zone (mastery learning).
What the evidence doesn't say
- It doesn't say "harder is always better" — that inversion of the framework causes real damage. The claim is specific: certain, named difficulties, at achievable levels.
- It doesn't say confusion is a goal. Unclear instructions, poor explanations, and disorganized materials are undesirable difficulties — they load working memory without engaging learning processes (cognitive load theory is the account of the bad kind).
- It doesn't excuse ignoring struggle. The teacher's judgment call — is this the productive reach or the unproductive flail? — remains a judgment call; the framework just tells you not to rescue too early.
In the classroom
- Stop grading methods by how the lesson felt. Smoothness is evidence of performance, not learning. Judge methods by delayed checks — next week's retrieval, not this lesson's glow.
- Prepare pupils for the feeling. "This is supposed to feel harder — the reaching is the learning" converts frustration into meaning. Children tolerate difficulty they understand.
- Keep difficulties achievable: retrieval with feedback after honest attempts; spacing short enough that reconstruction succeeds; interleaving only among methods each already established.
- Watch for the rescue reflex — supplying the answer at the first pause converts a desirable difficulty into a re-reading event.
