The learning styles myth: what the evidence actually shows
Somewhere between 80% and 95% of teachers surveyed across multiple countries believe that students learn better when taught in their preferred style — visual, auditory, or kinaesthetic (Dekker et al., 2012; Newton, 2015). It is probably the most widely believed claim in education. It is also, on the direct evidence, wrong — and it isn't a harmless wrongness, because styling lessons costs preparation time and can actively misallocate how content gets presented.
What the claim actually is (and isn't)
Precision matters, because the myth survives by shape-shifting. The testable claim — the matching (or "meshing") hypothesis — is: diagnose a learner's style, deliver instruction in that style, and they will learn more than if taught in another style. For this to be true, experiments must show a crossover interaction: visual learners doing better with visual instruction and auditory learners doing better with auditory instruction.
The claim is not: "learners differ" (true, enormously — in prior knowledge, working memory, interest, speed), or "people have preferences" (true — but preference is not efficacy), or "some content is best presented visually" (true — for everyone; a map beats a verbal description of a coastline for every learner in the room).
The evidence, briefly
Pashler, McDaniel, Rohrer and Bjork (2008, Psychological Science in the Public Interest) were commissioned to review the field. Their conclusion was unusually blunt for an academic review: the literature contained virtually no studies with the design needed to validate the matching hypothesis, and the few adequately designed studies mostly found results that contradicted it.
Since then, researchers have run the fair test on purpose:
- Rogowsky, Calhoun and Tallal (2015, Journal of Educational Psychology) matched and mismatched adults' verbal/visual preferences with audiobook vs e-text instruction: no matching effect on comprehension.
- Husmann and O'Loughlin (2019, Anatomical Sciences Education) found anatomy students' VARK-classified styles didn't predict better outcomes even when study strategies matched their diagnosed style — most students didn't study in their "style" anyway, and it wouldn't have helped.
- Meanwhile the belief remains near-universal among educators across countries (Dekker et al., 2012; Newton & Miah, 2017), which is why this page exists.
Why the myth is costly, not just wrong
- It spends scarce preparation time producing three versions of material when the same hours spent on retrieval practice or spacing have strong evidence behind them.
- It can degrade presentation choices. Content has a best modality — diagrams for structures, narration alongside animation (multimedia learning), doing for procedures. Styling by student instead of by content means some students get the worse modality on purpose.
- It labels children. A child told they are "not a reading learner" has been handed a ceiling, with no evidence behind it.
What the evidence doesn't say
- It doesn't say all students are the same. Prior knowledge is the individual difference that does matter, massively — which is why mastery structures and placement are the evidence-based way to individualize.
- It doesn't say preferences are worthless as comfort. Letting a child choose where feasible costs little; the error is believing the choice changes learning efficacy.
- It doesn't indict multimodal teaching. Combining words and pictures helps most learners (Mayer's multimedia research) — for reasons that have nothing to do with styles.
In the classroom
- Match modality to the content, not the child. Ask "what's the best representation of this idea?" — everyone gets that one.
- Individualize on prior knowledge (placement, prerequisites, corrective loops), the difference with real evidence.
- For procedures, the modality is doing. Nobody learns typing visually, auditorily, or kinaesthetically-as-a-style; they learn it by typing.
- Retire style inventories kindly. Colleagues believe this in good faith — the Pashler review is the citation to share, not a gotcha.
How Wiz Kids applies this

Skills are taught in the modality of the skill itself — every task is performed in a working simulation, because computer skills are procedures and procedures are learned by doing.
