Word processing: a progression that follows the writing research
Word processing is the rare edtech intervention with old, boring, replicated evidence: Bangert-Drowns' 1993 meta-analysis found composing on a word processor produced modestly better writing than pen drafts; Graham and Perin's Writing Next (2007) confirmed it across newer studies with a solid effect concentrated among low-achieving writers; later reviews (Morphy & Graham, 2012) sharpened the same conclusion. The mechanism is no mystery: revision becomes cheap. On paper, changing a sentence means recopying a page, so children don't revise; on screen, text is provisional, and the behavior the writing curriculum begs for — rework — stops costing more than it's worth.
Why the effect needs unlocking
The catch the meta-analyses also surface: the benefit assumes the tool isn't the struggle. A child hunting keys at single-digit WPM is paying transcription costs that eat the revision dividend — working memory spent on where is M is unavailable for what should this sentence say (the transcription-automaticity finding from Berninger's program, in its keyboard form). So the progression below is ordered by a single principle: automatize the lower layer before making it load-bearing.
The five-rung ladder
- Text entry — typing to functional fluency, the gate everything waits on.
- Editing — the rung schools skip: selection, caret navigation, cut/copy/paste as reflexes, undo as the safety that licenses experimentation. This is where revision-is-cheap becomes physically true for the child; a writer who can't select a sentence can't rework one.
- Formatting, with restraint — bold/italic as meaning (emphasis, titles), and the classic failure mode named honestly: given twenty fonts, children design instead of write (the redundant-decoration lesson applies to nine-year-olds' documents perfectly). Constrained palettes teach more than full toolbars.
- Structure — headings, lists, paragraphs-as-units: the document as an outline the reader can navigate, which is file-naming's sibling insight — organization is communication.
- Style and reuse — named styles, templates: "change every heading at once" is a child's first meeting with abstraction in a tool — define once, apply everywhere — quietly the same idea the code realm teaches as charms.
What the evidence doesn't say
- It doesn't retire handwriting — the parallel-systems evidence stands (readiness page); the claim is about revision economics, not channel supremacy.
- It doesn't bless spell-checkers uncritically — support, yes; the research on over-reliance is genuinely mixed, and "the red line is a question, not an answer" is the defensible framing.
- It doesn't say tools teach writing — the meta-analyses measure word processing within writing instruction; the tool amplifies a curriculum, it isn't one.
In the classroom
- Gate composition-on-screen on typing fluency — until then, keyboards for practice, paper or oral work for composing; the evidence's benefit assumes the unlock.
- Teach editing as its own unit — selection and undo before any formatting toolbar; revision-cheapness is the whole prize.
- Constrain formatting deliberately — two fonts, three moves; expand as restraint is earned.
- Make one revision visible weekly: project a draft, rework a sentence live, undo, try again — showing that text is provisional teaches what a term of telling doesn't.
