Placement diagnostics: meeting every child where they actually are
Ausubel opened his 1968 textbook with the field's most quoted sentence: "The most important single factor influencing learning is what the learner already knows. Ascertain this and teach him accordingly." Half a century of research has kept both clauses true — and most classrooms still act on neither, because ascertaining is real work. In digital skills the spread is extreme: one nine-year-old has typed daily for three years; the desk-mate has never used a physical keyboard. Teaching them the same Tuesday lesson fails both — and the failure modes differ: the expert learns contempt for the subject, the beginner learns the subject is not for them.
Why placement is the partner of mastery
A mastery structure makes prerequisites explicit — which creates the placement problem and its solution. Without placement, a mastery curriculum forces the experienced child to grind through months of already-held skills (seat time masquerading as rigor); with placement, the prerequisite graph becomes a map of what to check: probe the graph's load-bearing nodes, grant what's demonstrated, and start each child at their actual frontier. Placement isn't a bolt-on to mastery learning; it's the entry protocol the structure implies.
Design rules for honest placement checks
- Probe by performance, not self-report. Children misreport in both directions — confidence without skill (the digital-native trap) and skill without confidence, the second disproportionately in exactly the children placement should be rescuing. "Show me" settles it in seconds (performance assessment).
- A probe must not contain its answer. A placement check that displays the keyboard chord tests reading. Recall-style probes — goal stated, method withheld — are the only ones that measure (the same rule as reviews).
- Grant in clusters, respecting prerequisites. One well-chosen probe evidences a cluster (typing a sentence fluently evidences home-row letters); but grants must close over prerequisites — skipping a child past skill B while its prerequisite A stands unverified plants a gap that mastery structure exists to prevent. Order probes so every grant's foundations are granted first.
- Make skipping dignified and failing cheap. The trial must be optional, framed as an honor ("prove your spells, skip ahead"), and a failed probe must cost nothing but a normal lesson. Placement that punishes attempts teaches sandbagging.
- Trust, then verify by schedule. Granted skills enter spaced review like any other — a placement over-grant self-corrects at first review instead of compounding silently.
- Late joiners are the common case, not the exception: mid-year arrivals, school transfers, the child returning from a term away. Placement is a door that stays open, not an induction event.
What the evidence doesn't say
- It doesn't endorse ability-labelling. Placement locates a child's current frontier per skill; it is the opposite of a fixed track — frontiers move, and the same child can place high in typing and at zero in spreadsheets.
- It doesn't require long tests. A well-ordered probe sequence with cluster grants is minutes, not sessions; diagnostic value concentrates in the graph's chokepoints.
- It doesn't replace teacher knowledge — it augments it with evidence exactly where teacher intuition is weakest (the quiet child's unsuspected competence).
In the classroom
- Run the ten-minute audit (type, save, attach) with every new cohort before planning a single lesson.
- Probe the chokepoints: typing fluency, file operations, copy/paste — the skills most other skills stand on.
- Offer, never impose, the skip trial — and celebrate both outcomes ("you proved five spells!" / "now we know exactly where to start").
- Re-open placement on every arrival and after long gaps; September's map is stale by March.
How Wiz Kids applies this
Every student may take the optional Wizard Trial: an ordered sequence of performance probes (recall-style — nothing displays its answer) where each pass grants a prerequisite-closed skill cluster, with grant order machine-checked so no skill is ever granted above an ungranted foundation. Failing a probe costs nothing; granted skills enter the same spaced-review verification as everything else; and the trial reruns for any late joiner — because in real classrooms, someone new arrives every month.
