The digital native myth: growing up with screens doesn't teach computer skills
The most consequential myth in digital education isn't taught in any course — it's an assumption in the timetable: children raised on technology absorb technology, so explicit instruction is unnecessary. It is why typing left many curricula, why "ICT" hours shrank, and why a child can reach secondary school able to install a game mod but unable to attach a file to an email, name a document findably, or tell a search result from an advertisement.
Where the idea came from
Marc Prensky coined "digital natives" and "digital immigrants" in a 2001 essay (On the Horizon) — a provocative metaphor about generational difference, offered without empirical evidence, that escaped into policy as if it were a finding. Within a decade, researchers reviewing the claim (Bennett, Maton & Kervin, 2008, British Journal of Educational Technology) described the debate as an academic "moral panic" resting on anecdote; Kirschner and De Bruyckere's later review (2017, Teaching and Teacher Education) is titled, without hedging, "The myths of the digital native and the multitasker."
What children actually can and can't do
The distinction the myth misses is between consumption fluency and production/comprehension competence. Daily exposure trains the former: swiping, launching, watching, messaging within one app's rails. It demonstrably does not train the latter, and the direct measurements are sobering:
- The ICILS assessments (International Computer and Information Literacy Study; Fraillon et al., 2018 cycle, run by the IEA) tested tens of thousands of teenagers across many countries on real computer and information tasks. Only around 2% reached the highest proficiency level — the level involving critical, independent information work — and large minorities failed to exceed the lowest level. These are the fully "native" cohorts.
- The Stanford information-literacy studies (Wineburg, McGrew, Breakstone et al.; the 2016 SHEG report and successors) found students at every level — middle school through university — overwhelmingly unable to evaluate online information: accepting sponsored content as news, judging credibility by page polish, rarely checking a source. Their word for the results was "bleak."
- Interface-generational drift adds new gaps: educators and IT staff widely report incoming students unfamiliar with files and folders at all — an artifact of growing up in search-and-app ecosystems that hide the filesystem. Exposure to modern interfaces actively withholds some concepts older interfaces taught by necessity.
None of this is a deficiency in children. It is the ordinary truth that incidental exposure produces incidental skills. Nobody expects children to learn piano because the house has one; a computer is no different.
The equity sting
The myth harms unequally. Where schools assume skills arrive from home, the children who acquire them are the children with home devices, unmetered connectivity, and adults who model production use — a socioeconomic gradient repeatedly visible in ICILS data, where computer literacy correlates with home resources within every participating country. "They'll pick it up" is, in distributional terms, "the affluent will pick it up."
What the evidence doesn't say
- It doesn't say children are bad with technology — consumption fluency is real, and confidence is genuinely high. The gap is specifically in transferable, productive, and evaluative skills.
- It doesn't say every child lacks these skills — it says the skills track opportunity and instruction, not birth year.
- It doesn't settle how much instruction time is needed; it settles that zero is the wrong number.
In the classroom
- Audit assumptions, not confidence. Children will confidently claim computer skill; ask them to type a paragraph, save it somewhere findable, and email it as an attachment. The audit takes ten minutes and usually ends the debate.
- Timetable the fundamentals explicitly — typing, file management, email, search evaluation — as taught, practiced, assessed content (our benchmarks page has age-realistic targets).
- Treat search/media evaluation as a taught skill, not a disposition: the Stanford group's lateral-reading curriculum shows evaluation improves when explicitly taught (lateral reading).
- Never let "they know more than me" end the lesson. A pupil's app fluency and a teacher's judgment about information are different assets; the classroom needs the second.
