Typing and dyslexia: why keyboards matter more for the children they're hardest for

Evidence grade: PROMISING, practitioner-endorsed, honestly under-trialed. The mechanism case (transcription load, assistive access) is strong and rests on solid writing research; specialist bodies (the British Dyslexia Association prominently) recommend touch typing for dyslexic learners; direct trials of typing instruction with dyslexic children are few and small. Graded accordingly — and the recommendation survives the grade, because the downside is small and the plausible upside is a child's written voice.

For a dyslexic child, writing by hand stacks difficulties: spelling under full manual load, letter formation consuming attention, and a page that preserves every crossing-out for inspection. The keyboard doesn't touch the underlying phonological difficulty — nothing about QWERTY makes spelling easier — but it changes the surrounding economics in ways that matter more for this child than for their classmates, which is why typing shows up in nearly every specialist recommendation list.

The mechanism case

Transcription load is the writing bottleneck — Berninger's research program established that handwriting and spelling difficulties consume the working memory that composition needs, and dyslexic writers pay the steepest version of that tax. Typing, once automatized, is the cheaper transcription channel: no letter-formation cost, uniform output, and revision that doesn't mean recopying — the meta-analytic finding that word processing helps struggling writers most is exactly this population's result.

Typing is the doorway to the assistive layer. Spell-check that suggests from approximations, text-to-speech proofreading, speech-to-text for drafting, dictionaries on tap — substantially keyboard-mediated, and access assumes typing fluency. A dyslexic child who can't type is locked out of most of the toolkit built for them; the fluency is infrastructure, not just speed.

Automaticity must be real to pay. The load argument only cashes out when typing runs below attention — half-learned typing adds load. Which is the practical argument for teaching it properly and early (the readiness window), not gesturing at it.

Instruction adjustments that matter

  1. Decouple typing practice from spelling assessment. Typing drills full of hard words test spelling, not keys; early fluency work should use phonically simple material so the motor learning isn't gated on the difficulty being worked around. (Accuracy-first still applies — accuracy of keystrokes, not of orthography.)
  2. Expect a longer runway, same destination — progress rates vary more; mastery pacing absorbs that without public cost, and self-referenced measurement ("faster than your own handwriting" as the milestone) keeps the goal honest and personal.
  3. Shorter, more frequent sessions — the spacing evidence generally, amplified by fatigue realities.
  4. Teach the assistive layer as curriculum, not concession — spell-check strategy (the red line is a question, not an answer), text-to-speech proofreading; framed as power tools, which is what they are.
  5. Mind the co-occurrence — dyslexia travels with dyspraxia/DCD often enough that a struggling typist may need motor accommodations too; watch how the child types, not just the score.
