Design memo: why our consent gates are playable
Design memos document real decisions in Wiz Kids and the research behind them.
Somewhere in our browser realm, a nine-year-old meets a cookie popup with a huge glowing ✨ Accept all ✨ button and a small grey "Only necessary" underneath. Later, a gate with no quiet option at all — just glitter and a little "Manage settings" door hiding pre-ticked toggles ("Share with 214 partners"). Later still, a gate that takes their refusal and begs: "Are you SURE? 🥺". We built all three deliberately, dark patterns and all. This memo is the why.
The problem: the shrug is trained early
Children meet consent gates constantly, and untaught, they learn exactly what the patterns are engineered to teach: click the shiny thing, the popup goes away. By adulthood that shrug is a reflex the measurement studies show the industry relies on. Telling children "read the popups carefully" is rules-recital against professionally optimized manipulation — a fair fight requires practice against the real thing.
The reasoning: inoculation needs the live virus (attenuated)
The inoculation tradition in misinformation research keeps finding the same thing: pre-exposure to a manipulation technique, in a safe form where it can be examined, confers resistance to it in the wild. That's precisely what a simulation affords (why we simulate anything): our gates are the real patterns — same asymmetric prominence, same pre-ticked mazes, same nagging — with the payload removed. Nothing is tracked, nothing shared; "Accept all" costs a coaching flash and an unmet goal, not a data trail. The child gets to lose safely, which is the one thing the real web never offers.
The escalation ladder
The three gates teach in deliberate sequence, mirroring how the wild versions escalate:
- The glitter button — the fair-ish fight: both options exist; one glows. Skill: find the quiet option; big-and-shiny is not the same as right.
- The settings maze — the quiet option removed; "no" lives behind a door, pre-ticked toward yes. Skill: enter anyway, untick what you never asked for, save. (The maze includes one locked toggle — "Remember my sign-in, always on" — so children see the necessary/optional distinction rather than learning "toggle everything off.")
- The nagging gate — refusal answered with puppy eyes. Skill: an answer given once is already given — consent fatigue named as a trick, and the countermove (same quiet answer, twice) rehearsed to boredom. Choosing to cave isn't blocked, either: it records "all," honestly, and the unmet goal does the teaching — judgment practice includes the freedom to judge badly and see why.
The line we drew
Two rules kept this honest. The patterns appear only where defeating them is the lesson — nowhere in Wiz Kids does any dark pattern serve us; the product's own interfaces follow the Children's Code ethos the gates violate (that contrast is itself curriculum: our safety realm asks children why doesn't Wiz Kids have these popups? — answer: nothing to consent to). And the fiction names the manipulation explicitly — "the button THEY want is big and shiny," "sites nag hoping you'll cave" — because inoculation works through recognizing the technique, not through generalized suspicion. Children leave with a field guide, not a phobia.
The bet
An adult who's clicked ten thousand real consent gates has ten thousand reps of the shrug. A child who's beaten our three has a dozen reps of seeing the trick and taking the quiet path — before the reflex forms, while the asymmetry favors the learner. We think a dozen deliberate reps beat ten thousand accidental ones. That's the bet the whole product makes, gate by gate.
