Lateral reading and SIFT: teaching children to evaluate online information
For a generation, schools taught website evaluation with checklists applied to the page itself: does it look professional? Does it have an About page? Is there a contact address? The research verdict on this approach is brutal: it teaches children to grade exactly the surfaces that deceivers control. The alternative — reading laterally — is teachable, fast, and works.
The problem, measured
The Stanford History Education Group's assessments (Wineburg, McGrew, Breakstone & Ortega, 2016; scaled nationally in Breakstone et al., 2021) put thousands of students from middle school to university in front of real evaluation tasks. Results the authors themselves called "bleak": large majorities of middle schoolers couldn't distinguish sponsored content from news stories; high schoolers accepted a photograph as evidence for a claim because it was a photograph; students at every level judged credibility by polish, .org domains, and on-page self-description. The ICILS international assessments tell the same story at global scale: sophisticated evaluation is rare even among "digital native" cohorts.
What fact-checkers do differently
McGrew, Wineburg and colleagues then studied the people who evaluate sources for a living. Professional fact-checkers barely read an unfamiliar page before leaving it: they open new tabs and read about the source — who runs it, what others say about it, whether the claim appears anywhere reputable. Wineburg and McGrew (2019) called this lateral reading, against the vertical reading (staying on the page, working down it) that students — and smart academics in their comparison groups — defaulted to. The fact-checkers' second habit: click restraint — scanning a results page before clicking anything, rather than trusting rank order (why the first result isn't a verdict).
Mike Caulfield packaged these habits for teaching as SIFT: Stop (don't share, don't believe, don't rage — pause); Investigate the source (leave the page; who is this?); Find better coverage (search the claim, not the page); Trace to the original (photos, quotes and studies mutate as they travel — see stale news).
Crucially, teaching this works: McGrew et al.'s classroom interventions (2019 and since) and subsequent randomized studies (including large online trials with adults) show explicit lateral-reading instruction measurably improves evaluation — one of the clearer instructional wins in the literature.
Adapting it for primary ages
The full SIFT workflow assumes search fluency children are still building, so the primary version compresses honestly:
- Stop is age-perfect as-is — the pause before believing/sharing is teachable from the first browser lesson, and it's the habit with the best effort-to-value ratio.
- "Who is telling me this, and how do they know?" is investigate-the-source sized for nine-year-olds.
- Second-source checking ("find it somewhere else you trust before believing it") is find-better-coverage sized down.
- Ad-spotting comes first: sponsored-result recognition is concrete, binary, and the single most failed item in the Stanford middle-school data — start there.
What the evidence doesn't say
- It doesn't rehabilitate checklists — currency-authority-purpose acronyms applied to the page itself repeatedly fail against real deception; don't teach them as the main tool.
- It doesn't make children cynics. The goal is calibrated trust — the same moves that debunk a fake validate a genuine source; teach both outcomes or you've taught paranoia.
- It doesn't transfer automatically from one lesson. Like every judgment skill it needs spaced, varied practice across contexts (spacing).
In the classroom
- Teach ads/sponsored results as lesson one — concrete, testable, foundational.
- Model lateral reading aloud on a projector: land on an unfamiliar site and narrate leaving it — the move looks like cheating to children until a trusted adult performs it.
- Run second-source drills: one claim, two sources, one question — "do they agree, and who's in a position to know?"
- Practice on true AND false items in every set, or the lesson teaches "everything is fake."
- Make "screenshot ≠ proof" and "check the date" recurring refrains — the two cheapest checks with the highest yield.
