Design memo: why our streaks forgive
Design memos document real decisions in Wiz Kids and the research behind them — including the drafts we caught.
The draft that failed the test
Our first streak design was the industry default, because defaults are what you type before you think: consecutive days, a flame that grew, and — the part that matters — a reset to zero on a miss, with a "don't lose your streak!" nudge sketched for the home screen. It survived until we ran it against the question that later became our published test: does the mechanic still serve the child on their worst week?
A child in Year 4 does not control their computer access. They get sick. They go to grandma's. The family goes camping. Under the drafted design, every one of those ordinary childhood events ended with the product punishing them for it — the flame dead, the number zeroed, the message received: your absence was a failure. And the behavioral literature says exactly what that engineers: loss-aversion grip, joyless streak-saving, and the abandonment cliff when the inevitable miss finally lands — a failure mode that, in a learning product, deletes the learner. Meanwhile the habit research the streak supposedly serves (Lally et al., 2010) says the missed day doesn't even matter for habit formation. The reset punishes a non-event.
What shipped instead
- Presence is celebrated; absence is silent. Practice two days running and 🔥 appears with the count. Miss a day — or a week — and the flame is simply absent on return: no zero, no broken-streak screen, no guilt copy anywhere in the product. The child's map, progress, and welcome are exactly as they left them.
- Nothing is gated on it. The streak decorates; it owns no content, no rewards of consequence, no progression. It cannot become a hostage because it holds nothing.
- The fiction teaches rest. "Resting the wand" is literal curriculum in our safety realm (screen-time balance) — a product that taught balance while punishing days off would be lying in one of its two voices.
- The classroom reality check: most of our students practice once a week by timetable (the model). A calendar-day streak would zero every child every week by design — a mechanic that punishes the intended usage pattern is wrong by inspection.
The objection, answered
"Doesn't forgiveness blunt the mechanic?" Yes — deliberately. The loss-framed streak is more gripping; that's what makes it profitable and what makes it wrong for children. We kept the half the habit evidence supports (a warm consistency cue, a small celebration of rhythm) and discarded the half that runs on loss aversion — accepting the engagement cost knowingly. Our retention has to come from the learning being worth returning to; the moment a number is doing that job instead, the product has started lying about why it exists.
The general lesson we took: defaults are load-bearing. The harmful version required no decision — it arrived free with the genre. The honest version had to be chosen, argued for, and defended against its own metrics. That asymmetry is worth knowing about every mechanic you inherit.
