One hour a week: making a real digital-skills program fit a real timetable
Nobody chose one hour a week because learning science demanded it; timetables did. The productive question isn't whether an hour is enough (enough for what?) but what an hour a week genuinely buys across primary years, structured well — and the answer, compounded over four years, is roughly 140–160 hours of deliberate practice: more instructional time than most adults ever received for the tools they use daily. That is enough to produce a fluent, safe, judgment-capable computer user — if the hour respects three constraints.
Why weekly rhythm is secretly an asset
The great fear about weekly lessons — "they forget everything between sessions" — has the science exactly backwards. Spacing means the week's gap is where consolidation happens; the session-opening struggle to retrieve last week's skill is the strengthening (retrieval practice). A concentrated "technology week" each term produces the fluent-then-forgotten pattern the spacing literature predicts; the humble weekly hour, with reviews built in, is the distributed schedule researchers would prescribe. The forgetting between lessons isn't the leak in the model. It's the mechanism.
The shape of a good hour
A structure that matches the evidence (adapt freely):
- Minutes 0–10 — review, closed book. Due retrieval from previous weeks — typing warm-up plus recalled skills. Highest-value minutes of the hour; never skip them for "more content."
- Minutes 10–30 — new instruction, one or two genuinely new elements (cognitive load says few), taught by doing.
- Minutes 30–50 — practice with feedback, where mastery checks happen and the teacher circulates to the struggle the [dashboard/observation] surfaces.
- Minutes 50–60 — clean landing: finish-or-bookmark, one connection to life outside ("this is how you'll find any file you ever lose"), done. A clean ending each week also models the finite, purposeful screen session (screen time).
The three constraints that decide whether the hour compounds
- Cumulative, not episodic. Forty independent "lessons about technology" produce forty Mondays of amnesia. The hour compounds only inside a mastery structure: every week standing on verified previous weeks, with placement handling the spread.
- Fundamentals get protected minutes. Typing especially: it gates everything and improves only with regular practice — the ten-minute warm-up across four years is how 25 wpm happens (benchmarks). The perpetual temptation is to spend the whole hour on this term's shiny topic; the fundamentals tax must be non-negotiable.
- The hour must not depend on homework. Home practice is a bonus lane, never load-bearing — the moment progression assumes home devices, the program teaches the access gradient instead of computing.
What one hour a week cannot do
Honesty about the model's limits: it cannot produce professional-grade output projects (that's project-time, cross-curricular); it cannot carry a school's entire digital integration (other subjects must still use the skills — that's where transfer gets exercised); and it cannot survive being the first thing cancelled for assemblies — protection of the slot is a leadership decision that decides the whole program's fate. In Australian terms: the hour is how the Digital Literacy capability finally gets a timetable line, with much of the Digital Technologies subject riding along; the subject's open-ended design work still deserves its project blocks.
In the classroom
- Same slot, protected, weekly — rhythm is the mechanism; irregularity is the killer.
- Open with retrieval every single week — if you adopt nothing else from this page, adopt the closed-book ten minutes.
- Let pace vary, not the slot: mastery structures absorb the spread; the timetable doesn't have to.
- Track the compounding: a start-of-year and end-of-year performance audit (type, save, attach — the ten-minute audit) makes the hour's case to leadership better than any advocacy.
