Points and badges: what the research actually found

Evidence grade: MIXED, and unusually well-studied. Points and badges are gamification's most-trialed elements, including honest experiments with null and negative results. Points and badges are where gamification usually starts, because they're easy to bolt on β€” which is exactly why the research on them is so instructive: bolted-on is the condition most trials tested, and the results explain both the industry's enthusiasm and the teachers' scepticism.

What the trials found

Points change behavior without changing motivation. Mekler and colleagues' careful experiments found points and levels increased the quantity of task activity while leaving intrinsic motivation and quality essentially untouched β€” points work as performance feedback and mild social signal, not as meaning. That's genuinely useful (more practice reps matter when the reps are good) and genuinely limited (nobody learns to love a subject from its scoreboard).

The classroom study with teeth: Hanus and Fox (2015) ran a semester-long controlled comparison and found students in the gamified course (badges, leaderboard, coins) ended with less motivation, satisfaction and empowerment than controls β€” and lower exam scores, mediated by the motivation drop. One study, but a landmark, because it demonstrated the mechanism the overjustification literature predicts: reward systems layered onto already-meaningful activity can subtract meaning.

Badges split by function. The badge research (Hamari's field experiments and others) finds effects when badges act as information β€” marking real competence, visible progress, goals worth wanting (goal-gradient effects on activity) β€” and finds noise or backfire when they act as decoration or bribe: badges for showing up, badges for everything, badges nobody can explain. A badge is a claim about the learner; badges that claim nothing devalue the ones that claim something.

The design line the evidence draws

The heterogeneity resolves into a usable rule: points and badges succeed as honest signals of real mastery and fail as synthetic motivators. Signal design means: awarded for demonstrated competence (not attendance), scarce enough to mean something, legible (a child can say what any badge certifies), and informational rather than controlling in framing β€” "you can now do X" rather than "do X and you'll get Y."

What the evidence doesn't say

In the classroom

  1. Audit any point system with one question: what does a point certify? If the answer is "clicking," redesign.
  2. Fewer badges, harder claims β€” a badge wall a child can explain beats a badge flood they ignore.
  3. Watch the crowding-out tell: if children start asking "do we get points for this?", the system is teaching the wrong lesson β€” the overjustification page has the repair kit.
