Ergonomics for children at computers: what matters and what's folklore

Evidence grade: MIXED — real signals, thin causal chains. Surveys associate children's screen work with musculoskeletal complaints (neck, shoulders, wrists), and the biomechanics of mismatched furniture are straightforward. But strict causal evidence for specific setups preventing specific harms in children is limited, and adult office-ergonomics dogma transfers less cleanly than posters imply. This page keeps the advice proportionate to the evidence.

School computing inherited its furniture from adults and its posture advice from office regulation, and neither fits an eight-year-old: feet dangling from adult chairs, monitors above sightlines, full-size keyboards under small hands. The research on children specifically — school laptop-use studies, adolescent musculoskeletal surveys — finds discomfort genuinely common, dose-related, and worst where equipment mismatch is worst. What it does not support is the frozen "correct posture" poster: the emerging consensus in ergonomics research is that the best posture is the next posture — variation and movement beat any fixed position, for children even more than adults.

The hierarchy of what actually matters

  1. Breaks and movement — the one intervention everyone endorses. Static load is the enemy; regular movement resets it. For a one-hour weekly lesson this is nearly free (natural task boundaries make micro-breaks structural); for longer sessions it needs scheduling. Pairs with the eye-health page's same logic.
  2. Gross mismatch fixes, cheapest first: a footrest (a box works) so feet land flat instead of dangling; screen roughly at-or-below eye level (laptops on desks are already close for small users — laptop stands built for adults can worsen children's geometry); chair height so forearms reach keys without shoulder-shrugging. These address the mismatches the school-furniture studies actually measured.
  3. Wrist habit, not wrist hardware: floating-or-neutral wrists during typing beat planted-and-bent ones; this is coachable in the same breath as technique and matters more than gel accessories.
  4. Load realism: heavy schoolbags-with-laptops and marathon sessions show up in the complaint data more than desk geometry does — the displacement-and-dose questions are ergonomics questions too.

What the evidence doesn't say

In the classroom

  1. Build movement into the lesson's structure — stand-and-shake between task blocks; it costs thirty seconds and is the best-evidenced item on this page.
  2. Do the two-minute setup check at term start: feet supported, screen not above eyes, shoulders down while typing — then stop worrying.
  3. Coach wrists inside typing instruction, where the habit forms.
  4. Teach it as machine-operation knowledge: "set up your cockpit" gives children ownership of the checklist (the operator identity) — a transferable habit, unlike a poster they ignore.
