Presentation literacy: teaching children that slides are not the speech
Presentations are the genre children will produce for the rest of their schooling and much of their working lives — and the genre adults perform worst, in a specific, measurable way. The wall-of-text slide read aloud to a room isn't just dull; the experimental literature shows it actively reduces what the audience learns. Teaching children the evidence-based version early means teaching them something most of their future colleagues never learned.
The evidence, briefly
Richard Mayer's multimedia-learning research program tested how words and pictures combine in instruction across dozens of controlled experiments, yielding principles with unusually consistent support:
- The multimedia principle: words plus relevant pictures beat words alone — the case for slides existing at all.
- The redundancy principle — the one that indicts standard practice: narration plus identical on-screen text is worse than narration alone. The audience can't not-read; reading and listening to the same words collide (the redundancy effect), and comprehension drops. Reading your slides aloud is the best-documented way to make an audience learn less.
- The coherence principle: interesting-but-irrelevant material (decorative clip art, tangents, that hilarious GIF) measurably harms learning — "seductive details" seduce working memory away from the point.
- The signaling principle: cues that highlight structure (one idea per slide functions as signaling) help.
- Modality: pictures explained by speech beat pictures explained by on-screen text — the eyes do the diagram, the ears do the words.
The classroom translation is exactly the folk wisdom of good speakers, now with data: the slide is the picture; the speaker is the words. Few words per slide isn't a style preference — it's what leaves the audience's ears free for the human.
Why this is perfect primary content
The genre's failure mode — write the essay, paste it onto slides, read it — is a habit, and habits automatize whatever is practiced. A child whose first fifty decks are built under a words-budget never develops the paste-and-read reflex adults spend careers failing to unlearn. And the constraint is generative, not restrictive: forced to six words, a child must decide what the point is — a slide-count words-budget is secretly a summarization exercise, which is where the thinking lives.
Presenting matters as much as building: the deck that's never delivered teaches document-making, not communication. Finishing by presenting — even to three classmates — closes the loop the genre exists for, and rehearses the real skill: you, talking, with pictures behind you.
What the evidence doesn't say
- It doesn't ban text — labels, key terms, and quotes-as-objects have jobs; the principle targets redundant and excessive text.
- It doesn't crown a magic word count — our six-word budget is practitioner calibration for children (adults get told 6×6, 10/20/30, etc.; all are folklore numbers wrapped around the real principle).
- It doesn't apply to slides-as-documents — decks designed for reading (reports in slide form) follow document rules; the evidence above governs slides accompanying a speaker.
In the classroom
- Impose the words-budget and defend it with the why: "your audience can listen to you or read your slide — never both."
- Require a picture per slide, ban decoration: relevant image, no seductive details — the coherence principle as a checklist item.
- Story order before software: the deck's outline (beginning → middle → end) is decided away from the tool, then built.
- Always present: the assessment is the delivery, not the file — and small audiences count.
