The England computing curriculum (KS1 & KS2): what it requires and how to cover it

The National Curriculum for computing (statutory in England's maintained schools since September 2014) replaced the old ICT programme with three strands that the subject community summarises as computer science, information technology, and digital literacy. It is admirably short β€” the KS1 and KS2 programmes of study fit on a page β€” which leaves schools to work out the how almost entirely themselves. This page unpacks each requirement, notes what the research says about teaching it, and maps coverage honestly, including gaps.

Honesty note: we map Wiz Kids against each aim below because teachers ask us to. Where coverage is partial or absent, we say so plainly β€” an aim marked "not covered" needs another part of your provision.

Key Stage 1 (Years 1–2): the requirements, unpacked

The KS1 programme of study requires that pupils be taught to:

1. "Understand what algorithms are; how they are implemented as programs on digital devices; and that programs execute by following precise and unambiguous instructions." The foundational CS idea. Research on early programming supports starting with sequencing in concrete, visible worlds before any syntax (computational thinking). 2. "Create and debug simple programs." Debugging deserves equal billing with creating: error-diagnosis tasks build the concept that programs fail informatively. Wiz Kids: covered β€” the Forge includes explicit fix-the-broken-charm tasks, and every run is a free, unpunished experiment.

3. "Use logical reasoning to predict the behaviour of simple programs." Prediction-before-running is a strongly supported instructional move (it forces a mental model). Wiz Kids: covered β€” the Seeing Stone lessons are dedicated predict-first tasks: the program arrives pre-written, the child places a crystal on the tile where they believe the golem will end, and a single run settles it, with stars for prediction accuracy. Par scoring and gem worlds reinforce the same planning habit throughout the realm.

4. "Use technology purposefully to create, organise, store, manipulate and retrieve digital content." This is the IT strand: files, folders, saving, finding. Evidence context: the filesystem mental model no longer arrives from home (digital natives). Wiz Kids: a core strength β€” the File Forest realm covers creating, naming, organising, moving, deleting/restoring, searching, and the Downloads mystery, all in a working explorer simulation.

5. "Recognise common uses of information technology beyond school." Awareness aim. Wiz Kids: addressed through lesson fiction and scenario tasks rather than as dedicated lessons β€” partial; circle time and visits do this well.

6. "Use technology safely and respectfully, keeping personal information private; identify where to go for help and support…" The digital-literacy strand's safety core. Wiz Kids: covered extensively (secrets/passwords, personal information, kindness, help-seeking β€” the Wizard Safety realm), with scenario-based judgment tasks rather than rules-recital, in line with evidence that applied judgment transfers better than slogans.

Key Stage 2 (Years 3–6): the requirements, unpacked

1. "Design, write and debug programs that accomplish specific goals… solve problems by decomposing them into smaller parts." Wiz Kids: covered through the Charm Forge and Rune Scribe progression (goal-directed programs of increasing structure; decomposition arrives with named charms/runes β€” see below).

2. "Use sequence, selection, and repetition in programs; work with variables and various forms of input and output." The classic constructs ladder. Evidence supports meeting each construct where it is forced β€” a task solvable without selection teaches selection to nobody, which is why our authoring tools mathematically verify that (e.g.) an if-block is genuinely required. Wiz Kids: sequence, repetition (counting loops and while-walks), selection (sense-and-decide), variables (the Rune Scribe's growing step), functions (named runes and named charms β€” beyond the letter of the curriculum), and runtime input (ask-blocks: programs that ask the user mid-run, in worlds engineered so hard-coding can't work). General output beyond the program's world: partial.

3. "Use logical reasoning to explain how some simple algorithms work and to detect and correct errors." Wiz Kids: covered for detect-and-correct; the explain aloud half belongs to your classroom talk β€” pair our tasks with "predict, run, explain" discussion for full coverage.

4. "Understand computer networks including the internet… and the opportunities they offer for communication and collaboration." Wiz Kids: covered on both halves β€” the use of networked services is deep (browser, search, email, group chat), and conceptual networking is taught content: the Unseen Roads realm covers addresses, messages chopped into packets, routers, and rerouting around failure.

5. "Use search technologies effectively, appreciate how results are selected and ranked, and be discerning in evaluating digital content." Direct evidence base: the Stanford civic online reasoning work (lateral reading). Wiz Kids: a flagship area β€” query formulation, exact-phrase search, sponsored-result judgment, cross-source checking, stale news, fake images and screenshots.

6. "Select, use and combine a variety of software… to design and create a range of programs, systems and content that accomplish given goals, including collecting, analysing, evaluating and presenting data and information." The applied-IT capstone aim. Wiz Kids: covered with intent β€” spreadsheets through to charts and multi-skill projects, documents, slides, video editing, and cross-application capstones (a single project spanning spreadsheet, email, document, print and presentation).

7. "Use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly; recognise acceptable/unacceptable behaviour; identify a range of ways to report concerns about content and contact." Wiz Kids: covered broadly (phishing and reporting, group-chat conduct, permanence, privacy, consent gates, sessions on shared computers); reporting routes (CEOP, school systems) are inherently local β€” pair with your school's own procedures.

Practical notes for subject leaders

  1. The statutory text is deliberately thin β€” audit against the strands, not the page count. A provision can satisfy the letter with one unit of Scratch and one e-safety day while leaving pupils unable to type or save a file; the IT and digital-literacy strands carry no less weight than programming.
  2. Sequence cumulatively. The KS2 aims silently assume fluencies (typing, files, mouse precision) the document never names. Timetable them explicitly in Years 3–4 or every later aim is taught through molasses (mastery learning).
  3. Assessment: performance beats quizzes for nearly every aim above β€” "attach the file" demonstrates aim-coverage in a way no multiple-choice item can (assessing digital skills).
