Computer lab or classroom devices? The trade-offs, honestly
Where the computers live shapes what can be taught on them — more than most curriculum planning acknowledges. The three models (dedicated lab, shared trolley, 1:1 devices) differ less in pedagogy than in three operational variables that learning science does have opinions about: session frequency, start-up friction, and sightlines.
What each model buys and costs
The lab buys uniform hardware (same keyboards — no small thing when motor skills are the curriculum), full-class simultaneity, teacher sightlines over every screen, and a scheduled, protected hour that competing priorities can't quietly eat. Its costs: the hour is also a ceiling (missed week = a fourteen-day gap in the spacing schedule), transfer suffers when computing is a place you visit rather than a tool where you work, and labs die by timetable — the room's existence doesn't guarantee your slot.
The trolley buys flexibility and in-classroom integration; its costs are the killers practitioners know: booking contention, battery roulette, distribution-and-collection eating ten minutes of every session, and mixed hardware. For skill-building specifically, the trolley's variance — different keyboards, sporadic access — is quietly hostile to consistent motor practice.
1:1 buys frequency — the variable with the most learning-science leverage: short, frequent practice beats a weekly block for spaced skill-building, and the meta-analytic 1:1 literature (Zheng et al., 2016) finds modest positive effects on outcomes, strongest where programs came with teaching change rather than hardware alone. Its costs: supervision surface (every desk a screen), shared-device hygiene inverted into personal-device care, and the equity cliff if "1:1" means BYOD (the access gradient imported into your classroom).
The variables that actually decide outcomes
- Frequency beats duration. Three twenty-minute sessions outperform one weekly hour for skill retention — whichever model gets you frequent wins on the evidence that exists.
- Friction is curriculum time. Ten minutes of trolley logistics in a forty-minute session is a 25% tax; labs and 1:1 pay it once, not per-session.
- Sightlines are a real feature — for coaching (spotting the hunt-and-pecker before the habit compiles) as much as for behavior.
- Keyboard consistency matters more than device quality for a motor-skills curriculum — same layout every session beats newer hardware sometimes.
What the evidence doesn't say
- It doesn't crown a model — the 1:1 literature's positive effects came bundled with pedagogy change; hardware alone moved little.
- It doesn't make labs obsolete — the "labs are the past" narrative is fashion, not findings; for uniform-hardware skill instruction the lab remains genuinely strong.
- It doesn't settle BYOD — but the equity and uniformity problems it imports are documented enough to treat it as a last resort for skills teaching.
In practice
- Audit your real frequency and friction, not your device count — a well-scheduled lab hour plus two trolley touch-ups can beat a contested 1:1 program.
- Protect whatever slot you have structurally — the recurring booking, named on the timetable; the one-hour model only works if the hour happens.
- Standardize keyboards where you can't standardize devices — external keyboards on mixed tablets are cheaper than new fleets and better for the actual curriculum.
- Whatever the model, mind sign-out habits — shared machines make session hygiene daily curriculum for free.
