Shared-device hygiene: the habits that make classroom fleets safe
Most school computing is shared computing — lab rows, trolley fleets, the classroom's corner machines — which means most school computing happens on devices where the previous user's world is one forgotten sign-out away. Schools treat this as an administration problem; it's better treated as curriculum, because the shared fleet is a rehearsal space for exactly the session habits adult life demands at library kiosks, work hot-desks, and family laptops.
The habit set
- Sign out means sign out — the anchor habit: session ends, identity leaves the machine. The sessions page carries the child-facing reasoning (an open session is your name left holding the door); the classroom's job is making it ritual — the pack-up step as automatic as chairs-on-desks, because habits that survive are the rehearsed ones, not the recited ones.
- Own your session — the flip side: work under your login, always. The shared-account shortcut (one class login for speed) trades away everything — progress attribution, assessment evidence, accountability, and the very habit being taught. If login friction drives the shortcut, fix the friction, not the principle.
- Found-open protocol: a machine left logged-in is not an invitation — the taught response is sign it out (or tell the teacher), never explore. This is a genuine ethics micro-lesson — respect for others' digital space — rehearsable as a scenario before it happens live.
- The machine is shared; the state is not: downloads folder, browser history, saved passwords ("never save on shared machines" — the browser will offer; the answer is a taught reflex), USB leftovers — children learn that their stuff follows their account, not the machine, which is the filesystem-and-cloud model with a privacy edge.
- Physical care as commons care — clean hands, no food, report-don't-hide damage: unglamorous, and the difference between a fleet lasting three years or six (the budget page is written by these habits).
Why the shared fleet is secretly an asset
A 1:1 child can defer session hygiene for years; a shared-fleet child practices it daily from age eight — with real (small) stakes, immediate feedback, and dozens of reps a term. Like Chromebook fleets making sign-out cheap, the constraint carries the curriculum: schools that ritualize the habit set graduate children for whom kiosk-and-hot-desk hygiene is muscle memory. The design requirement it imposes on software: switching users must be fast — ten-second logins or the ritual dies of friction.
What the evidence doesn't say
- It doesn't quantify incident rates — classroom session-abuse data doesn't exist in research form; the risks are established in kind, not measured in frequency. The habits are cheap insurance either way.
- It doesn't require surveillance — hygiene by habit beats hygiene by monitoring, on the same logic as everywhere else.
- It doesn't replace fleet management — auto-logout timers and profile policies back the habits up; defense in depth, with the habit as the layer children take with them.
In the classroom
- Ritualize the pack-up sign-out — same slot every lesson, checked like homework diaries, until it isn't checked because it doesn't need to be.
- Run the found-open scenario once a term, before it happens.
- Keep logins fast — audit the friction; slow logins are why shortcuts breed.
- Narrate the why once: "your name holds the door open" outlives "because I said so."
