Chromebook classrooms: teaching real skills on the fleet you actually have

Evidence grade: practical guidance on established facts. No trials compare skill outcomes by fleet OS, and none are needed for this page's questions: what ChromeOS shares with the desktop-computing canon, where it differs, and how to teach so skills transfer. Fleet facts are documentable; the transfer reasoning follows the standard principles.

Chromebooks won the school-fleet war for reasons procurement understands: cheap, robust, bootable-in-seconds, centrally managed, and hard for a nine-year-old to brick. The pedagogical question they raise is different: do skills learned on ChromeOS transfer to computing-in-general? The answer is mostly yes, with specific, teachable exceptions — and knowing which is which is the difference between a fleet choice and a curriculum ceiling.

What transfers cleanly

The canon this library teaches is substantially OS-agnostic, and Chromebooks carry it well: a real keyboard (the cockpit-check requirement — this is what separates Chromebooks from tablets), the browser as a full-fidelity environment (address bars, tabs, search judgment — native territory), typing and caret navigation identically, files-and-folders genuinely (the Files app has the tree, Downloads mystery included — though cloud-first defaults mean the filesystem model needs deliberate teaching before save-to-Drive habits bypass it), and the office genres (documents, slides, spreadsheets) in their web incarnations.

The differences worth naming

The management honesty

Chromebook fleets come with Google Workspace for Education, which means the fleet decision is also a data-relationship decision — accounts, Drive contents, and telemetry sit with one vendor under education terms that schools should actually read (the vendor questions apply to platform vendors most of all, and the ST4S/department-assessment layer covers Workspace in most Australian jurisdictions). None of this is a reason to avoid the fleet; it's a reason to know what was decided when it arrived.

In the classroom

  1. Teach the universal core as universal and the edges as local — one sentence of framing ("every keyboard has a copy chord; here's ours") buys the transfer.
  2. Teach files deliberately before cloud defaults erase the need — the tree exists on ChromeOS; visit it on purpose.
  3. Make sign-out ritual — the fleet's shared reality is a free daily safety curriculum.
  4. Name what other computers do differently once a term — installs, desktops, Cmd keys: concept-level inoculation against single-platform provincialism.
