Game-based learning, honestly: the evidence map

This pillar carries a heavier disclosure than most: we make a gamified product. A skill map, stars, streaks, an earned currency, a fiction with a mascot — Wiz Kids is unambiguously a learning game, so a pillar assessing gamification evidence is us grading our own homework. We publish it anyway, on the theory that the differences between gamifications matter more than the category — the same literature that shows badge-and-leaderboard schemes lowering exam scores shows other designs supporting motivation, and knowing which is which is precisely what a buyer of children's software needs. Our stake is declared; the grades follow the evidence.

The honest headline

The gamification literature's summary finding is uncomfortable for the industry: "gamification works" is not a supported claim — specific mechanics in specific contexts have specific effects, some positive, some null, some negative. The full evidence review walks the meta-analyses; the short version is that points-badges-leaderboards ("PBL") schemes — the default template — carry the weakest and most reversal-prone record, while the mechanics with real support are mostly the ones borrowed from learning science (immediate feedback, visible progression, optimal challenge) wearing game clothing.

The map

The evidence core. The gamification evidence review — meta-analyses, the famous classroom reversal, and the moderators that decide outcomes. Its companion deep-dives: why no leaderboards (the ranking evidence) and the overjustification effect (what contingent rewards do to interest — the single most important page for anyone designing or buying reward systems).

The line. The dark-pattern line — our attempt at the distinction the industry avoids drawing: which engagement mechanics serve the learner and which serve the metrics, with the test we apply to our own features. Streaks and habit formation sits right on that line and gets the full treatment (the design memo shows where we landed).

The mechanics that survive scrutiny (articles coming): progression and mastery signals (stars as information, par scoring), earned-only currencies, narrative and fiction, cooperative goals — each with its evidence and its failure modes.

The children-specific hazards (coming): loot boxes and gambling-adjacent mechanics, engagement-maximizing design in children's apps, and the Children's Code's nudge prohibitions as the emerging legal floor.

The stance

Four commitments run through this pillar and our product, each traceable to the literature:

  1. Game mechanics are delivery, not payload — the learning design (spacing, retrieval, mastery) must stand on its own; gamification that substitutes for it is decoration on sand.
  2. Rewards are byproducts, never bargains (overjustification) — celebrate progress made; never dangle trinkets to produce it.
  3. No child is ranked against another (the evidence) — competence feedback is self-referenced or cooperative.
  4. Engagement is bounded by the child's interest, not maximized against it (the line) — sessions end cleanly, absence is never punished, and "resting the wand" is taught as a skill.
