Digital permanence: teaching "carved in stone" without teaching terror
Every safety curriculum tells children the internet is forever. Most tell it as a threat — the college-admissions ghost story, the future-employer bogeyman — and the fear-appeal literature has a consistent warning about that approach: threat without efficacy produces avoidance and concealment, not caution. The child taught "one mistake ruins your life" doesn't stop making mistakes; they stop reporting them. Permanence deserves teaching as physics — how the system actually behaves — with the emotional register of seatbelts, not horror films.
The actual physics, child-sized
Deletion deletes your copy. The delete button removes your access to a thing — it says nothing about the copies. Once a message reaches another screen, that screen's owner has a copy you cannot touch; once a post is public, any viewer may have screenshotted, saved, forwarded. This is the load-bearing concept, and it's teachable as a one-liner: "delete cleans your room, not the world."
Sending is copying. Digital "sending" never moves a thing — it duplicates it. The group-chat noticeboard rule is this fact socialized: a message to a 23-person chat is 23 copies, immediately, whatever happens to yours later.
Screenshots dissolve every technical promise. Disappearing-message features expire the app's copy; the screenshot is outside the app's power (as is a second phone pointed at the screen). Worth teaching accurately because children encounter vanish-mode features young and reason from them badly in both directions — over-trusting the vanishing, and over-trusting screenshots as proof, which cuts the other way.
And yet: not everything persists. Honest teaching includes the other half — links rot, platforms die, most content sinks into practical invisibility. The precise claim isn't "everything lasts forever"; it's "you lose control of copies the moment they leave you, and you can't know which ones will surface later." Uncontrollability, not immortality, is the concept.
Teaching it without the terror
- Physics first, consequences second. Children accept "that's how copying works" without anxiety; it's the ghost stories that curdle. The mechanism justifies the caution on its own.
- The noticeboard test beats the employer test: "would you pin it where the whole school walks past — this year and next?" is concrete, present-tense, and doesn't require a nine-year-old to fear a job interview.
- Pair permanence with repairability. The un-nuanced version teaches that a mistake is eternal doom — which is both false (context, apology, and time do real work) and disclosure-poisoning. The pairing that works: copies are uncontrollable, people are forgiving, and the fastest repair is telling a trusted adult early. Children need the second clause or they'll never grant you the third.
- Model the pause, not the paranoia: the Stop from SIFT is the same reflex — a beat between impulse and send.
What the evidence doesn't say
- It doesn't support scare-first assemblies — the fear-appeal literature's efficacy requirement applies squarely here.
- It doesn't mean children shouldn't post — the goal is calibrated judgment about what, not digital abstinence.
- It doesn't make adults' own feeds exempt — children notice the gap between the lecture and the parent posting their photos; the "sharenting" conversation is the adult homework this topic assigns.
