Metacognition: teaching children to run their own learning
Metacognition β knowing about and steering your own thinking β sounds like a luxury for later schooling. The evidence says the opposite: it's among the highest-leverage things a primary classroom can teach, partly because the alternative is so poor. Children (like adults) run their learning on introspective signals that are systematically miscalibrated β and the whole science pillar keeps colliding with the consequences.
The core problem: the feelings lie
The metacognition literature's central discovery is that judgments of learning run on fluency, and fluency is the wrong signal. Re-read text feels known (it isn't); massed practice feels effective (it isn't); blocked drills feel better than interleaved (backwards); the smooth lesson feels learned (performance β learning). Learners then choose their study behavior based on these inverted signals β Kornell and Bjork's studies caught participants preferring precisely the conditions that served them worse. Metacognitive instruction is, at bottom, calibration repair: replacing feel-of-knowing with tested-knowing.
What the teaching actually is
The effective versions (Zimmerman's self-regulation cycle; the EEF's synthesis) are concrete and subject-embedded, not inspirational:
- Planβmonitorβevaluate, made explicit: before (what's the goal? what will be hard?), during (is this working? am I stuck-stuck or productively stuck?), after (what worked? what next time?). The teacher's most powerful move is modelling the invisible β thinking aloud through their own planning, errors, and repairs, which converts expert self-regulation from private magic into copyable procedure.
- Self-testing as the calibration tool: "cover it and try" as a taught habit β the one behavior that replaces feeling-known with knowing-known (retrieval, wearing its metacognitive hat).
- Strategy vocabulary: children can't choose strategies they can't name; teaching the names (spacing, self-test, worked example first) hands over the controls.
- Calibration practice: predict-then-check ("how many will you get right?") β the gap between prediction and result is the lesson, and it shrinks with practice.
What the evidence doesn't say
- It doesn't support content-free "learning to learn" courses β the transfer literature's filing problem applies; metacognition sticks when taught inside real subjects.
- It doesn't make children self-teaching β self-regulation grows within structured teaching, not instead of it; the novice still needs guidance.
- It doesn't happen by exhortation β "check your work" without taught procedure is noise; the effective versions specify how.
In the classroom
- Think aloud weekly β your own real planning and error-repair, narrated. Highest value per minute in this whole topic.
- Install cover-and-try as the default study move and name the fluency trap in child language: "feeling easy isn't the same as knowing."
- Run predict-then-check on quizzes; celebrate calibration improvements, not just scores.
- Debrief process, not just outcomes: "what did you try when stuck?" asked routinely turns strategy into a discussable object.
