The left-brain/right-brain myth: hemispheres don't make personalities
Of the classic neuromyths, this one has the most respectable parentage. Sperry and Gazzaniga's split-brain studies (from the 1960s; Nobel-recognized) genuinely showed the hemispheres doing different work in patients whose connecting fibers had been surgically cut — language functions typically lateralizing left, certain visuospatial functions right. The myth is what pop psychology built on top: that intact people are governed by a dominant hemisphere that sets their cognitive personality — logical "left-brained" accountants, creative "right-brained" artists — and that teaching should match the type.
What the evidence shows
- Lateralization is about functions, not people. Real specialization exists at the level of specific processes (aspects of language, of spatial attention), but every complex activity — mathematics, painting, reading, music — recruits both hemispheres in constant collaboration across an intact corpus callosum. Creativity is not a right-hemisphere product; arithmetic is not a left-hemisphere one; the neuroscience of both shows distributed, bilateral networks.
- The direct test was run. Nielsen et al. (2013, PLOS ONE) analyzed resting-state scans from over a thousand people specifically hunting for individual left-vs-right dominance of the kind the myth requires. Result: hub lateralization for certain functions, yes; people sorting into left-brained and right-brained profiles, no.
- The belief persists regardless — the neuromyth surveys (the same ones that track learning styles; Dekker et al., 2012) find large majorities of teachers across countries endorsing it, which is why it belongs in this pillar: it drives real classroom decisions.
Why it matters (the label problem, again)
The myth's harm is the harm of all typing-systems: labels become ceilings. A child told they're "right-brained" has been handed a scientific-sounding reason to disengage from mathematics; a "left-brained" child gets license to skip the creative work — the same self-fulfilling machinery as ability praise, wearing a lab coat. It also sells products: "whole-brain" and "right-brain training" programs trade entirely on the myth's vocabulary. And like learning styles, it spends real instructional attention on a false variable while the true individual difference — prior knowledge — goes unmeasured.
The keepable kernel: varied cognitive demands are good curriculum. Children should analyze and create, compute and compose — not because it exercises hemispheres, but because both are worth learning. You can keep every good practice the myth ever motivated and drop the neuroscience cosplay.
What the evidence doesn't say
- It doesn't deny hemispheric specialization — that's real; the myth is the extrapolation to personal cognitive types.
- It doesn't say brain-based framing is always wrong — genuine cognitive science (load, spacing) earns its classroom keep daily; the test is whether the claim survives its citations.
- It doesn't mock the teachers who believed it — the myth was taught to them, often in training; the citation trail is the correction, not the blame.
In the classroom
- Strike the labels from vocabulary — "she's just right-brained" deserves the same retirement as "he's not a maths person."
- Vary demands on their own merits: analysis and creation both, for everyone, as curriculum rather than neurology.
- Apply the neuromyth smell test to products and PD: any claim selling "brain-based" typing of children should produce its studies or leave.
