The ISTE Standards for Students, mapped for primary classrooms

The ISTE Standards for Students (International Society for Technology in Education; current student standards released 2016) are the most widely referenced technology-education framework in North American schools and common currency internationally. Unlike England's tightly-specified computing curriculum, ISTE's standards are aspirational profiles — seven identities a technology-fluent student grows into. That breadth is their strength and their implementation hazard: everything maps to them loosely, so this page maps specifically, and marks gaps as gaps.

The seven standards, unpacked for primary

1. Empowered Learnerstudents leverage technology to take an active role in choosing and demonstrating competency in their learning goals. For primary ages, the honest reading is: students see their own progress, understand what they're working toward, and experience technology as something they operate rather than something that happens to them. Research context: visible progress and self-referenced goals sit on solid motivational ground (self-determination theory's competence need — Ryan & Deci, 2000). Wiz Kids: a skill map the child navigates, per-skill mastery visible as stars, placement that honors what they already know. Strong fit at the age-appropriate reading; the fuller self-directed-goal-setting reading belongs to later schooling.

2. Digital Citizenrights, responsibilities and opportunities of living, learning and working in a digital world; safe, legal, ethical behavior. The standard's primary-age core: personal information, kindness and its online failure modes, permanence, device sharing, and the beginnings of data privacy. Wiz Kids: one of the deepest mappings — safety scenarios, group-chat judgment (pile-ons, renames, leaving well), permanence, phishing, sessions on shared computers, cookies and consent dark patterns. Legal/copyright literacy: partial (present in fiction, not yet dedicated lessons).

3. Knowledge Constructorcritically curate information using digital tools; evaluate accuracy, perspective, credibility and relevance. The evidence base here is unusually direct: the Stanford civic online reasoning program showed students at every level fail at source evaluation — and improve when lateral reading is explicitly taught (Wineburg & McGrew, 2019; Breakstone et al., 2021). Wiz Kids: strong fit — query craft, exact-phrase search, ranked-and-sponsored results, second-source checking, stale news, image/screenshot skepticism.

4. Innovative Designeruse a variety of technologies within a design process to solve problems by creating new, useful or imaginative solutions. Primary-age reading: open-ended making with iteration. Wiz Kids: partial by design — our tasks are goal-verified rather than open-ended (that's what makes mastery checkable), with creative latitude inside constraints (posters, decks, films, budgets). Pair with genuinely open project work; we'd argue both halves are necessary and neither substitutes for the other.

5. Computational Thinkerdevelop and employ strategies for understanding and solving problems in ways that leverage the power of technological methods. Maps to Wing's (2006) framing: decomposition, patterns, abstraction, algorithms. Wiz Kids: strong fit — the full constructs ladder (sequence → loops → conditionals → while-loops → functions) in two different clothings (golem worlds, turtle runes), plus data work in spreadsheets (formulas, conditions, charts). Notably, our task validators prove each construct is necessary for its task — a child cannot satisfy a conditionals task without conditioning.

6. Creative Communicatorcommunicate clearly and express themselves creatively using platforms, tools, styles, formats and digital media appropriate to their goals. Wiz Kids: solid coverage of the communication-craft substrate: documents with structure, slides built on less-words-more-signal evidence (presentation literacy), email genre conventions, video editing (trim, sequence, titles, sound). The expressive/audience-facing half — publishing to real audiences — is the classroom's, deliberately: our simulations are consequence-free by design.

7. Global Collaboratoruse digital tools to broaden perspectives and enrich learning by collaborating with others. Wiz Kids: largely not covered, by an explicit design decision — we build no child-to-child communication (a privacy and safety stance; see zero-PII architecture). We teach the skills of collaboration (group-chat conduct, teamwork norms over chat, reply-all judgment) in simulation; live collaboration itself belongs to supervised classroom platforms. Mark this standard for coverage elsewhere in your provision.

Using this mapping

  1. ISTE's breadth needs a spine. The standards say what a student becomes, not in what order Tuesday's lesson goes. Sequence with a mastery structure (why) and let the standards audit the destination.
  2. Watch standards 4 and 7 in any packaged curriculum, ours included — they're where honest mappings say "partial." Open-ended design and real collaboration are precisely the things a verified-task system shouldn't fake.
  3. Digital citizenship (2) and knowledge construction (3) are the evidence-rich standards — the ones where explicit instruction has documented effects. If time forces triage, triage toward them.
