Scotland's Curriculum for Excellence: Technologies, mapped for primary
Scotland's Curriculum for Excellence organises learning as experiences and outcomes ("Es and Os") across levels rather than year-by-year statutory content: for primary purposes, Early (nurseryβP1), First (roughly P2βP4), and Second (roughly P5βP7). Computing lives in the Technologies curriculum area, substantially refreshed in 2017 when Education Scotland published revised Es and Os and β usefully for planning β benchmarks describing what achievement of a level looks like. The refresh gave primary computing a much clearer spine: a Digital Literacy strand and a Computing Science strand, each with three organisers.
Honesty note: as with our England and Australia pages, we map coverage because teachers ask; where it's partial or belongs to your classroom rather than any app, we say so.
The Digital Literacy organisers
"Using digital products and services in a variety of contexts to achieve a purposeful outcome." The applied-fluency organiser: by Second level, learners are expected to select and use digital tools for real tasks β documents, presentations, data handling, media. Wiz Kids: a core strength β documents, slides, spreadsheets through charts, email, video editing, and cross-application capstone projects, all assessed by performance. The unnamed prerequisite fluencies (typing, files, shortcuts) that make "purposeful outcome" achievable are taught explicitly rather than assumed.
"Searching, processing and managing information responsibly." Search skill, source judgment, and information organisation. Wiz Kids: flagship coverage β query formulation, sponsored-result judgment, second-source checking, plus file organisation as taught content (the mental model).
"Cyber resilience and internet safety." Scotland names this organiser more strongly than most curricula β resilience, not just rules. Wiz Kids: extensive β passwords and secrets, sessions on shared computers, phishing, consent gates, group-chat conduct and permanence, taught as playable judgment rather than assembly slogans. Local reporting routes are inherently yours β pair with your school's child-protection procedures (our reporting page covers the UK/Scottish landscape only generally).
The Computing Science organisers
"Understanding the world through computational thinking." Patterns, decomposition, algorithms as ideas. Wiz Kids: covered through the programming realms' design β sequencing, pattern-finding rewarded by par, decomposition via named charms β with our usual caution that broad-transfer claims outrun evidence.
"Understanding and analysing computing technology." How computers and networks actually work β by Second level, benchmarks reach binary representation and how the internet moves data. Wiz Kids: covered β the Cipher Vault (symbols β on/off β reading real binary) and the Unseen Roads (addresses, packets, routers, rerouting) exist for exactly this territory.
"Designing, building and testing computing solutions." The constructive organiser: writing and debugging programs of growing structure. Wiz Kids: covered β block sequencing through loops, selection, runtime input, variables and first functions (Charm Forge, Rune Scribe), plus real HTML page-building (the Loom), with debugging as first-class taught content.
Practical notes for Scottish schools
- Benchmarks beat Es and Os for auditing β the Es and Os are deliberately broad; the 2017 benchmarks are where "has my P6 class actually met Second level?" becomes answerable. Audit provision against benchmark statements per organiser.
- Digital literacy carries equal weight β the refresh's clearest message; a provision that is one coding unit plus an internet-safety day leaves four organisers unserved.
- Levels are mastery bands, not timetables β CfE's own philosophy (mastery learning) supports progression on demonstrated competence; placement diagnostics matter in a system where the same level spans three year groups.
