Year 4 computing: the consolidation year
If Year 3 laid foundations, Year 4 (ages 9–10) is where they consolidate into working capability — the year practice volume matters most, because this is when accurate technique either automatizes or erodes under the growing pressure to produce real work.
The year's work
Typing to functional fluency: sustained spaced practice carrying accuracy into speed — the beat-your-own-handwriting milestone is this band's realistic target for many children, and it's the milestone that matters (composition stops being bottlenecked by transcription).
Files as organisation: from "things live in places" to deliberate placement — naming for the future self, folder structures with reasons, multi-select, and the Downloads mystery solved.
Documents as craft: the editing rung — selection, caret navigation, formatting-with-restraint — the year revision becomes physically cheap, which is the whole word-processing dividend.
Email as a genre: To/CC, subjects that say the thing, reply vs reply-all — met in simulation years before a real account, per the window logic, with first phishing-spotting alongside.
Search, with judgment attached from day one: keyword thinking and — taught together, never separately — the ad question: who paid to be at the top? The primary-age evidence says this is the skill most reliably missing.
Programs that repeat and decide: counting loops, then selection — on tasks that genuinely force each construct, because optional constructs teach completion, not concepts.
Safety widens: scam techniques by name (too-good-to-be-true, countdown pressure), and sign-out as ritual on the shared fleet.
The checkpoint questions
By performance: typing faster than their handwriting (or visibly closing)? Files findable a week later by someone else? A short document formatted with meaning, not decoration? The fake email spotted and explained? A loop used because the task demanded it? The sponsored result identified in a lineup?
