Year 6 computing: the capstone year
Year 6 (ages 11–12) has two jobs: go under the hood — the conceptual computing that makes everything earlier make sense — and hand off well, because secondary school will assume whatever primary certified, accurately or not. It's also the last year the school controls the curriculum before phones, real accounts, and adolescence control the context.
The year's work
The machine's true face: the command line — exact words, Tab and history, wildcards, and the pipe: composition, computing's deepest primary-teachable idea. Also the year's best textual on-ramp toward secondary programming.
How the internet actually works: addresses, packets, routing around damage — the conceptual networking most curricula require and few teach concretely — and what data is: symbols, agreed codes, why machines speak in on/off, reading real binary.
Abstraction reached: named functions — define once, use everywhere — plus real HTML, page linked to page: text that builds something, the other half of the blocks-to-text bridge.
AI literacy, before secondary makes it urgent: the well-read guesser model — helper never boss, check what it claims, nobody can reliably detect its text — and the homework-integrity frame installed as identity ("robot push-ups") while stakes are still low.
Safety at pre-phone stakes: permanence and footprint revisited seriously, scam and manipulation techniques as a named bestiary, leaving-well and mute-wisely in group contexts — the year's safety work is rehearsal for the independence that arrives next.
The capstone: multi-application projects — spreadsheet feeding document feeding presentation, run like real work — the performance evidence that the whole arc holds together.
The handoff
What Year 6 should transfer to secondary, stated as capabilities: types without looking near handwriting speed or better; organises and finds files; operates the office genres; searches with judgment and checks claims; programs with loops, selection, input and functions in blocks, and has met real text (HTML, terminal); knows how the internet moves data and what binary is; carries the safety judgment and the tell-an-adult reflex. The transition page's warning applies everywhere: secondary should assess this at entry, not assume it — and a primary school that certifies it by performance gives its leavers evidence, not just exposure.
