New Zealand's Digital Technologies curriculum, mapped for primary

New Zealand revised its Technology learning area in 2017 to add Digital Technologies | Hangarau Matihiko, with all schools expected to be teaching it from 2020 — making digital learning an entitlement across years 1–13, which for primary and intermediate schools means years 1–8. The revision's distinctive structure: content is organised as progress outcomes — descriptions of what students can do at stages of a learning journey, deliberately not pinned one-to-one to year levels (a mastery-shaped choice this library approves of). Two technological areas carry the digital content; the broader NZC refresh (Te Mātaiaho) continues around them, so check current ministry guidance alongside this page.

Honesty note: the usual deal — we map because teachers ask, and mark partial or classroom-owned territory plainly.

Computational thinking for digital technologies

The first area runs from giving and following precise step-by-step instructions, through sequencing, loops and decisions in simple programs, to debugging and understanding that computers store and represent information in digital form. In primary years, students work through roughly the first three progress outcomes: non-computerised algorithms, then simple programs with sequence and iteration, then programs using inputs, outputs, sequence and selection, alongside binary-representation basics.

Wiz Kids: strong alignment — the Charm Forge's progression (precise instructions to a literal-minded golem; counting loops and walk-until-blocked; sense-and-decide selection; programs that ask for input mid-run) tracks the outcome ladder closely, with debugging as first-class content and the Rune Scribe adding variables and first functions. The digital-representation strand is directly served by the Cipher Vault (symbols → agreed codes → on/off → reading real binary). Our authoring approach fits the outcomes' spirit: constructs are taught where tasks mathematically require them, not where a worksheet mentions them (computational thinking, honestly graded).

Designing and developing digital outcomes

The second area is constructive and applied: creating digital content for purposes and audiences, managing and organising digital information, and understanding that digital applications store and share content. Primary progress outcomes emphasise purposeful creation with appropriate tools and early information management.

Wiz Kids: core strength — documents, presentations, spreadsheets through charts, email, video editing, real HTML page-building (the Loom), and cross-application capstones, on the foundation the outcomes silently assume: typing, file organisation, and fluent tool-switching. "Audience and purpose" judgment (email as a genre, slides that serve the talk) is taught content, not an assumption.

Beyond the two areas, NZ's wider digital-citizenship expectations (supported nationally by Netsafe) are served by the safety strand — search judgment, source checking, group-chat conduct, phishing — with local reporting routes (Netsafe's schemes) belonging to your school's own procedures.

What we don't do: Hangarau Matihiko exists in te reo Māori as a parallel curriculum document with its own conceptual framing (tūmatanui among them) — Wiz Kids is English-language and maps to the English-medium document only; kura and Māori-medium settings need provision we don't currently offer. And open-ended design briefs — students defining outcomes for audiences they choose — are the classroom's half of the constructive area; our tasks are goal-specified by design (why simulated).

Practical notes for NZ schools

  1. Use the progress-outcome structure as it's meant — track where each student is on the ladder (placement), not which year-level unit the class is "doing"; the structure explicitly licenses this.
  2. Don't let the two named areas eclipse the fluencies — the outcomes assume text entry, saving, and file navigation they never name; timetable them (the one-hour arithmetic).
  3. Years 7–8 are the handoff — intermediate students arriving without the primary outcomes face a compressed catch-up; assess by performance at entry rather than assuming coverage.
