Design memo: why everything is wizards
Design memos document real decisions in Wiz Kids and the research behind them.
A reasonable adult, meeting our product, might ask why teaching keyboard shortcuts requires a mascot, spell names, and a "Paper Golem." Isn't the fiction overhead — the coherence principle's seductive details, at product scale? It's a fair challenge with a real answer: the fiction isn't decoration on the curriculum. It's doing four specific jobs, each traceable, with rules that keep it on the right side of the research it could easily violate.
Job 1: names that make skills into things
"The Dancing Cursor." "The Great Swap." "The Choosy Count." A spell name gives a skill an identity — a handle children can hold, request, recall, and talk about. The memory literature's oldest tools (distinctiveness, imagery, meaningful organization) all favor the named, storied version over "Lesson 4.2: Find and Replace" — and the practical effect shows up in classroom talk: children who can name a technique can ask for it, notice its absence, and transfer it by name ("this is the Choosy Count again, isn't it?"). The skill tree becomes a world map; prerequisite structure becomes geography; abstraction gets an address.
Job 2: reasons, delivered in-world
Our standing rule — surprising system behavior must be explained at the moment it's met — runs through the fiction: spells "fade and come back stronger" (spacing), the golem "does exactly what you said" (debugging), the review asks "do you still remember?" because "that's how spells become yours forever." These are accurate mechanism explanations wearing story clothes — rationale-giving, which the motivation literature ranks among the cheapest supports there is, delivered in a register children actually absorb. The fiction is our explanation channel.
Job 3: emotional reframes that stick
Fiction can install a stance toward difficulty that direct instruction struggles to: bugs are clues; the frozen app gets a calm minute; the mouse sleeps tonight (constraint as game, not deprivation); "resting the wand" makes stopping a skill rather than a loss. Each reframe has its research backing elsewhere in this library (error climate, desirable difficulty framing, clean endings); the story is the delivery mechanism that makes them felt rather than recited. Narrative's documented memory advantage (Graesser and others: story structure is retained better than exposition) is here spent deliberately — on the attitudes, which are the hardest cargo.
Job 4: dignity for a remedial-feeling subject
An eleven-year-old who can't type sits in an awkward spot: the skill feels babyish to lack. The fiction reframes the whole enterprise — you're not remediating, you're training as a wizard, and the placement trial is proving your spells, not confessing your gaps. Tone does real work for exactly the children the equity data says arrive furthest behind.
The rules that keep it honest
The risks are real — seductive details harm learning, and fiction can shade into untruth — so the fiction runs on rails: (1) Story lives in language and framing, never as competing screen clutter — inside a task, the interface is the clean simulation and the fiction is the instruction's voice (coherence budget respected; confetti waits for completion). (2) The fiction never lies about the machine. Spells fade because memories do; the golem is literal-minded because programs are; every metaphor is a true mechanism wearing a costume, checked at authoring time — the day a story beat requires a false mechanism, the story beat loses. (3) The fiction points outward. Realms end by connecting to the real world ("this is how the fastest people you'll meet actually work") — the wizards are a vehicle for leaving the wizards behind.
